How to cleanse and charge your crystals: A beginner’s guide
Share
Crystals are often used as part of rituals for grounding, intention setting and creating mindful moments. Over time, many people choose to cleanse their crystals as a way of resetting them and reconnecting with the intention behind their practice.
If you’re new to crystals, cleansing them can be really simple. Here are a few easy ways to get started.
Why do we Cleanse Crystals?
In crystal practices, it is believed that crystals can interact with and hold onto the energy around them. This might be from the environment they have been in, the people who have handled them, or the intentions and rituals they have been used for.
Cleansing is a way of energetically resetting your crystals and bringing them back to a neutral starting point before setting a new intention.
You might choose to cleanse your crystals:
- when you first bring them home
- after using them during a ritual
- after a stressful or emotionally heavy period
- if someone else has handled them
- before setting a new intention
- simply when you feel they need a refresh
Think of it as a reset for your crystal. There is no strict schedule to follow. Cleansing can simply become another mindful part of your personal ritual practice.

Simple ways to Cleanse your Crystals
Smoke Cleansing
Pass your crystal gently through the smoke of blue sage, white sage or Palo Santo while focusing on your intention.
You might simply think or say:
“I release any energy that no longer serves me and welcome calm and clarity.”
Selenite or Satin Spar
Selenite or Satin Spar is commonly used in crystal practices as a cleansing tool. You can place your crystals besides or on top of these crystal wands and leave them there for a period of time.
This is also an easy option if you have several crystals you would like to cleanse together.
Moonlight
Another popular practice is leaving crystals somewhere they can be exposed to moonlight, such as on a windowsill overnight.
Full moons are often associated with cleansing and releasing, but you do not have to wait for a particular moon phase to create your own ritual.
What about Water and Sunlight?
This is where it is worth being a little careful.
Not every crystal should be placed in water, as some minerals can be damaged or affected by moisture. Prolonged sunlight can also cause the colour of certain crystals to fade.
If you are unsure what is safe for a particular stone, smoke cleansing or keeping it alongside selenite can be a simple alternative.
Set a New Intention
Once you have cleansed your crystal, take a moment to reconnect with why you chose it.
Hold the crystal cupped in your hand, take a slow breath and set a simple intention for how you would like to use it. Then, visualise light moving from the crystal into y9our hands and integrating with your energy.
There is no perfect way to cleanse your crystals. Like any ritual, it is the pause, intention and meaning you bring to the moment that makes the practice personal to you.
